Skylar Oh
Sophomore:
25th, 21:22 (Camera PR by 1:08)
Q: What was the feeling like for this season opener? "It was kind of weird because
after track was stopped (in mid-March), everything was different. The warmup wasn’t normal and the lineup
wasn’t normal but once we started running, it was exciting and felt like normal. When I was a freshman, I was kind of
not really good. I was kind of nervous. I went out maybe too hard but this year I felt more prepared. I was still nervous
but I knew what to expect compared to freshman year, when I didn’t really know what was going on. It
was kind of nice to know what to expect. I wasn’t as nervous and I knew how to pace myself."
Q: How
would you evaluate your race?
"I think it was pretty good. It was definitely a minute past even my
PR (personal record) last year so that was good. A lot better. I kind of went out too fast but other than that it was a pretty
good race for me. I wanted to be under 22:00. That was my goal, I think. I wanted to beat my time last year, but I actually
put in more time in the summer so I wanted to do better this year."
Q: What are you happy that you did during this offseason’s unprecedented circumstances that contributed to your performance?
"Honestly I didn’t run (train) last summer. I actually ran this summer a lot more so it was nice.
When I started camp (in July), it was just people going to West. It was kind of nice to bond with the team. I felt like
we actually pushed each other and got to run together. (In 2019) I didn’t really know I was going to run cross
country until a couple of days before it started last year."
Q: What are the positives the
team can take from the races?
"I think now everyone knows exactly what to expect with the COVID situation.
I think me personally it was nice knowing who I can run with and I think evyerone tested it out and how we can work.
We know who to run with during the actual race, who to stick with."

2020 Season preview Interviews! Updated August 31 -- Interviews posted as received
|
Delaney Engel,
junior 2019 3A state meet: 43rd 17:44.43
Q: What
things are you most excited about for this season?
"With the uncertainty of everything during this crazy and unusual time, I think everybody is thrilled to have the
ability to both practice and compete."
Q: What are the strengths of the team?
"I feel that one of the biggest strengths of the team this year is the level of dedication that everybody has. Although
everything is so much different at practices this year, nobody has allowed it to affect them. Everybody still gives 100 percent
effort at every practice."
Q: How would you evaluate the 2019 state meet?
"For me personally, I was disappointed with my outcome at the 2019 state meet, but it served as
a learning experience, reminding me to not put pressure on myself because to be at my best, I need to stay relaxed and have
fun."
Q: Does the team feel fortunate to have a season? "The team is definitely very thankful that there is a cross
country season this year. During both the track and offseason, everybody continued to train by themselves, despite the fact
that there was uncertainty about the upcoming season. So once we found out that we were in fact going to have a season, I
know everybody was very happy."
Q: How do you think the altered competition scheduled
will affect the team?
"This season is definitely very different from the others that we have experienced so far. As it
goes for the team, it’s been harder to get to know everybody since we can’t actually be near each other. As it
goes for the competition schedule, I feel that everybody was very accepting of it because we would rather have an altered
meet schedule than no meets at all."
Q: What did you learn from last year's seniors that
will help toward this season?
"As an underclassman, I was very nervous when I joined cross country because in middle school, we
sat in the bleachers before meets waiting for the high schoolers practice to finish and I remember sitting there watching,
thinking of how intimidating and scary they looked. However, after getting into high school, I realized that they were quite
the opposite of that. From the first practice to the last practice of the season, the seniors were beyond inclusive and helpful,
demonstrating the importance of leadership and making sure everybody felt comfortable. I was so thankful for that. Now that
I’m an upperclassman, I definitely want to carry on the family feeling of the team, making sure that everyone is comfortable
and included, because in order to be a strong team, we need to be there and support each other both in and out of running."
Q: What would make this a successful season? "In order to have
a successful season this year, the biggest thing necessary is to stay safe and healthy so that there is a season in the first
place. In order to do this, we have been taking many safety precautions that we will continue to implement while we’re
together as a team at practices and while we’re at home individually.”
|
Audrey Allman,
junior 2019 3A state meet: All-State 18th 17:12.66
Q: What
things are you most excited about for this season?
"I’m honestly really excited to get out and compete again. I know it’s been a while. March, I think was
the last time we raced. It’ll be nice to get back in my uniform and race again with the team and against some good competition.”
Q: What
are the strengths of the team?
"I know the team dynamic is a little weird with the break up (of our entire group) and to not have the whole team
together because of COVID. In our little (training) groups we are getting close, even though have to be socially distant.
We’re really working to support each other. I think for everyone, really since track season was canceled last year,
that is motivating the team to really push themselves to be the best they can be. I’m really excited to see how the
team is doing this year. I think everyone is really working hard on (improving) themselves."
Q: How
would you evaluate the 2019 state meet?
"Individually, I did have mono during state (Nov. 9) so that was really a negative for me to
push through mentally and obviously physically. Other than that, I thought I did the best I could run and still was satisfied.
I think I did really well. Everyone really kind of stepped up and did their best. All in all we had a pretty good state meet.
I found out (about my mono) after NXR (Nike Cross Regionals Nov. 16). At state I still was able to kind of maintain where
I was at. At NXR, my body kind of shut down so afterwards I went to the doctor. (The doctor) said I probably was carrying
it for the entire state series. I think I got it around early September, but the symptoms didn’t really start showing
and taking major effects until November. With mono, it’s very normal to carry it for a couple of weeks before you start
feeling it. I think I was able to hold it off longer than probably normal. I was still hit by that in November and December
and it did affect my track running, which ended up not really mattering because we didn’t have a track season (after
mid-March)."
Q: How do you feel you have progressed since last season? "I think with COVID and the lack of competition throughout
the spring it definitely really pushed me mentally and physically. How could I be the best runner I could be? Going out there,
doing workouts, running on your own, not knowing if there will be competition. It was really hard on me personally. I’m
sure if was for a lot of other runners. Looking at cross country, knowing I was training to be best I can be really helped
me grow as a runner. I think running in Colorado (in July) helped me. I’m really excited about the team, of course.
The team also really motivated me to be the best I can.
I was able to train at Team Prep USA (running camp) in Crested Butte, Colo. For the entire month of July, I was gone. I was
running with a bunch of runners from all over the country. It was a really special experience because I got to train with
Katelynne (Hart) one last time. I also got to really experience running from a different perspective because I’ve never
really trained anywhere else than Glen Ellyn. Especially after quarantine, it was really nice for me to run in a different
location and get away to run from home for a month and that really helped a lot. Paige King also got to run with us. I think
it really helped her a lot and I saw her improve a ton from that camp.”
Q: What were the challenges this particular offseason? "I think obviously just
staying motivated throughout the lack of not only contact with teammates but the people around you. Really everything was
uncertain. We didn’t know how track, cross country were going to play out. It was all about bonding and that motivation,
knowing, hoping, we’d still have a season. We do and we’re really thankful for that. Everybody tried their best,
just keeping motivated and having a positive mindset."
Q: How you anticipate the
team dynamic to differ from the 2019 season?
"It’s definitely different losing a lot of our senior leadership and, of course, Katelynne
(Hart), who was our No. 1 as long as I’ve been at Glenbard. Just making the best of our situation with all of the new
leaders and new girls, it’s definitely pretty chaotic right now, but the Hasses (head coach Paul Hass and girls track
head coach Kelly Hass) are doing a great job keeping us positive and social towards each other, even though we can’t
stay near each other."
Q: How do you hope to help the team from a leadership standpoint? "Well,
since we are in our little smaller (training) groups now, for me it’s all about connecting with the younger underclassmen
in our group. It’s about just pushing everybody, even though not everybody knows what’s going on. It’s even
been that way for me and all of the upperclassmen. It’s really being able to help the Hasses keep practices to move
smoothly and encouraging everyone to be the best they can be as well."
Q: Any team goals this
season? "I think team-wise it’s really just about staying encouraged, staying motivated. We only really have
dual meets and those are hard to be motivated for, a lot less people and different and we’re probably going to be running
the same courses. Staying motivated is the biggest goal and staying in a positive mindset.”
|
Paige King,
sophomore 2019 3A state meet: 138th 18:47.02
Q: What
things are you most excited about for this season?
"I am so excited that we get to have a season this year. I am very excited to see how we do as a team in our first
meet because we all worked very hard over the summer."
Q: What are the strengths of the team?
"The biggest strength of the team is our work ethic. We all worked very hard in the summer. I am excited to see all
the hard work pay off in our first meet."
Q: How would you evaluate the 2019 state meet?
"That was an amazing experience. I am so blessed to have been able to run in the state meet last
year. Although I ran a PR (personal record), I was not satisfied with my results and it is the fuel that inspired me to train
hard this past summer."
Q: What were the challenges this particular offseason? "The biggest challenge was not being able to run
with a lot of my teammates. I ran with Hannah (Moffatt) at the beginning of the summer and over quarantine, which was helpful
because we motivated each other to continue to train hard."
Q: How do you think the
altered competition scheduled will affect the team?
"We are all very competitive so we will adapt and adjust."
Q: What
did you learn from last year's seniors that will help toward this season?
"I learned the power of team from last year’s seniors. They truly made our team a team. They
were so kind and selfless towards everyone on the team last year. They always included everyone and thought about the team
before themselves."
Q: Any team goals this season? "Our team
has an amazing amount of depth this year. The goal for the team is to win conference. We have the talent and mental makeup
to win the conference this year.”
|
Anna Nickoley,
junior 2019 3A state meet: 109th 18:24.19
Q: What
things are you most excited about for this season?
"I’m very excited to get back in my spikes and start racing again, since it was February the last time we all
got to race. We’ve had some great summer training with so many kids putting in mileage and I’m looking forward
to seeing that pay off for everyone."
Q: What are the strengths of the team?
"This team is one of the smaller ones out of the sports at West, but it’s allowed us to become incredibly close
with each other, which has proved to be a great strength. Always cheering each other on during practice provides a lot of
encouragement for every runner, freshman-to-seniors. I think having that positive outlook has aided us all both physically
and mentally."
Q: How would you evaluate the 2019 state meet?
"At last year’s state meet we had some incredible races (Audrey Allman being all-state, Paige
King going sub-19:00) and experiences. Personally, I love Detweiller Park and think the course is amazing, which is always
a pretty big part of racing. Throughout the season we had a fair amount of races without a full varsity team, so I think something
we took from the experience was to trust the process and training that we’ve been doing since June."
Q: Do you and your teammates feel fortunate to have a cross country season? "We feel incredibly fortunate.
Thousands of miles were logged this summer and we have a crazy amount of newcomers, so getting the opportunity to have a season
has been a blessing and a chance to show our hard work over the past few months."
Q: How
did not having a complete 2020 track and field season affect your training?
"I was only able to race in two meets (indoors) due to an injury before the season was cancelled
(in mid-March). Fortunately, I was able to take a step back and realize how much I took running for granted and appreciate
everything the coaches do for the athletes. Despite not being able to see athletes compete, the coaches still continued to
send out training and encouragement. Everyone continuing to run/jump/throw during those bitter days in the spring was a direct
result of the incredible coaches we have and their dedication to the team. Realizing this has made me appreciate everything
they do, which has changed the way I look at running and the family we have created within the team."
Q: How
do you anticipate the team dynamic to be compared with 2019 season?
"This year we have to be broken up into three groups to minimize the chance of COVID spreading to
the whole team. Obviously this will be a lot different from the previous years, but I think it allows us to get to know people
better than you would if everyone was together. We have over 20 new runners to the team and breaking us up allows us to grow
closer within these groups."
Q: What would make this season successful? "A
successful season would include hard work and staying open-minded. We can already tell there’s going to be some major
changes to meets, but being able to keep an open mind and appreciate that we may get the chance to compete is going to be
important. We also have to continue to train and work hard, despite not knowing what the season may look like."
|
Hannah Moffatt,
sophomore 2019 3A state meet alternate
Q: What
things are you most excited for this season?
“I am most excited to race again and hopefully set a
new PR (personal record)! Team wise, I cannot wait to
see how everyone improves throughout the season,
and I am also eager to be there for when the freshmen
complete their first race, since that was me not too
long ago.”
Q:
What are the strengths of the team?
“This summer our team has logged an insane amount
of mileage, which is a fantastic foundation heading
into the season. We also were able to conduct
summer camp, following all health and safety
guidelines of course, which really helped our team
bond and grow closer together.”
Q:
How do you feel you have progressed as a runner since
last season?
“I have put in a lot more mileage this summer
compared to last summer, and I also have improved
my leg speed and overall long run pace. I also think I
have grown to love running even more than I did last
year!”
Q:
What would make this a successful season?
“I would be happy with this season if I am able to set a
new PR, but I also want to have a more positive
attitude, since I can be really hard on myself
sometimes. A better mindset along with faster times
would make this a successful season.”
Q:
How did not having a 2020 track and field season affect
you and your training?
“Not having a track season was difficult since there
were some days I had a hard time getting motivated to
train, but I did appreciate having such a flexible
schedule.”
Q:
Do you and your teammates feel fortunate to have a cross
country season?
“Absolutely. Training alone in the spring and
beginning of the summer is not something I want to
do again. I am so grateful that every day I get to see
my best friends in person and run with my
teammates.”
Q:
What did you learn from last year’s seniors that will help
you for this season?
“I learned that it is important to cultivate a strong
team bond and have a ton of fun since some of the
best memories are made during the cross country season."

Glenbard West Regional championship lineup courtesy of Paul Nickoley |
“I
told my teammates that they’re such an amazing team so I knew that was going to be a really tough thing to find when
going to find a college just because we’re really, really close. That was something I definitely found at Michigan.
I felt like the girls were very close and I also feel like at Glenbard as well as at Michigan there’s definitely a sense
of balance as far as when we’re on the course or training and competing, it’s very serious. We are all very motivated
to do the same things. But not running there’s kind of a step back and some fun as well. As far as Coach (Mike)
McGuire, he’s a great guy and something that I was really impressed with was just his long history at the University
of Michigan and how successful he’s been and how dedicated he is to the sport. I really, really trust him with my training
in the future and so I think just the combination of both the coach and the team were similar."
Katelynne Hart

|
Katelynne Hart at PND Invite courtesy of Paul Nickoley |
“It
definitely took me longer (to decide) than I wanted just because I was just so impressed with every school. Every coach was
amazing, every team was amazing. For those reasons, it was a very tough choice but I was able to narrow it down and I think
I found a very good place, some place that I fit very, very well in. That place is the University of Michigan. I’m very,
very excited. Coach McGuire was great to me, as well as the team. I definitely came to the realization (visiting Michigan)
that I wanted to stay in the Midwest because I had taken my North Carolina and Colorado visits first. I just think there’s
something to be said for staying in the Midwest, Midwestern people. I definitely really, really like the team and thought
that staying in the Midwest, being close to home was going to be a priority of mine. Because the decision was so hard, it
came down to very small things, but I’d say when I left Michigan I knew I’d stay in the Midwest. I just think
the rich history that Michigan has, a really good cross country and track program, as well as the girls (were factors). Something
that I actually talked about in one of my college essays was the fact that just the people and the pride they have in going
to Michigan was something that was really attractive to me.”
Katelynne Hart
|
|

“As
much I wanted (my parents’) opinions, I think they actually held back a little bit because they wanted me to make the
decision for me, which is very, very smart, and I’m grateful they did that. I think during the time it made it a little
more stressful. The more visits I went on, the more I kind of knew. Definitely a lot of me talking at them, a lot of discussions.
I think it was really hard trying to figure out what I wanted just because I haven’t been through a college (recruiting)
experience before. Did I know if I wanted to go into a program where I felt I could take the lead or just a bunch of different
things. I think that kind of reflecting on my running and racing, you have to be mentally tough and I guess just college as
a whole you have to be mentally tough to just know there’s going to be some challenges along the way. I think with any
school I’d go to, there’s going to be challenges. Just the college experience as a whole taught me that being
mentally tough is important.”

“I
think she’s certainly on the Mount Rushmore at least with the greats of Illinois. I won’t say
she’s the greatest, but I’ll say she’s on the Mount Rushmore of the top athletes in track and field. She
proved as a freshman (her distance tripling talents), when she ran the 4-by-800 and then came back and ran the 3,200 and then
won the (1,600). That’s a triple right there and you could argue that’s even a more challenging triple (than her
800, 1,600 and 3,200 3A state title sweep in May) based on what she split. She split a very low 2:11, 2:10 in that 4-by-800
because we were behind and she got us into fourth place. She goes to bed at 8 o’clock every night, she eats extremely
well, she takes care of every aspect of off-the-course training, conditioning and nutrition and iron and she’s not on
social media because she’s going to bed. She manages her time. She’s gets her homework done and she goes to bed.
She gets up fairly early and gets her runs in the morning, too. She does everything you ask her to do. This sport is very
unforgiving for those who don’t work hard. You don’t work hard, you won’t get the results and she has the
work ethic combined with amazing talent, which is why she is who she is.”
Paul Hass Glenbard West head girls cross country coach
|
“To have this decision made early takes the weight off of her and everybody else and she gets to thoroughly enjoy her
senior season. She should. God knows she’s done enough for everybody else. Right? It’s the Cadillac (combination
of great athlete, great person, great teammate). Here’s a kid who could rest on her laurels or has it all or act like
she has it all but what’s more important to her than team? That’s the legacy she’s going to leave behind
because that’s something everybody can tap into, whether your one of the top runners or somewhere in the middle of the
pack. When your best runner, whose one of the best runners in the nation, puts that as a priority, what’s the lesson
for everybody?”
Kelly Hass Glenbard West head girls track and field coach
